Container logistics delays expected "well into 2022" as infections cut back staffing

Container Transport Alliance Australia (CTAA) director Neil Chambers says many industry players are facing the "hardest conditions they have ever encountered" with the supply chain placed under enormous strain from staff shortages, terminal congestion and significant competition to secure vehicle booking slots.

Chambers says container transport operators have tirelessly kept international container supply chains functioning with little fanfare over the past two years with COVID protocols to keep staff and customers safe, but the Omicron variant has changed the game.

"Container transport operators across Australia have reported to CTAA that they are experiencing between a 5 per cent to 20 per cent reduction in available staff, including heavy vehicle drivers, warehouse staff, forklift drivers, container unpack crews and administration, due to COVID infections and isolation requirements," Chambers explains, noting in some extreme cases businesses have lost half their available labour.

Inventory overcorrections likely as supply chain pain hits retail availability

Product shortages have become all too common lately as businesses get waylaid by COVID infections and ongoing logistics challenges that show no signs of abating, but the current supply chain crisis belies a digitalisation shift that will change the game as we know it.

Nonetheless, short term pain remains on the horizon and many procurement managers will be tempted to go overboard on stock amidst supply chain unpredictability.

"You’re going to see a slightly increased cost of the supply chain while people deal with that lumpiness and that unpredictability, so they will then overcorrect slightly so that they don’t end up with no product to sell," explains Travis Erridge, chief executive officer and co-founder of TMX Global, a supply chain consultancy formed through TM Insight's acquisition of XAct Solutions.

Staff shortages mean "code red for retail" as hospitality operators plead for government support

"The tap was turned on in a far lesser time and right now it is code red for retail, so to turn your back right now would be a waste of every dollar you’ve put in over the last 22 months," says Chrissie Maus, general manager of the Chapel Street Precinct in Melbourne.

Businesses operating in one of Australia’s largest retail, hospitality, entertainment and lifestyle precincts have had around 35 per cent of staff come down with COVID-19 since the Christmas period, prompting closures and calls for government support as Omicron besets activity and the ability of managers to plan for the future.

Add to that the effects of "snowballing debt" for many and deferred rents kicking in, and Chrissie Maus of the Chapel Street Precinct says her organisation's 2,200 businesses are at crisis point.
